Happiness vs. Sadness

Can you experience true happiness without sadness?

Without sadness I think we fail to appreciate or understand what it is that we truly have in life, or to even know what it is that makes us "happy". I think it was created that way by design. An example from Biblical times...Jesus died on the cross which brought sadness to so many, but without that we wouldn't know the HOPE we have in salvation.
